Beschorneria yuccoides in the family Asparagaceae, can be found on the Loudon Terrace. This striking evergreen perennial forms a very architectural focus of any planting scheme. Its long, strap like, succulent leaves are grey green in colour and covered in a white bloom (glaucous). Beschornerias become even more striking when they decide to flower.

Reminiscent of Yuccas, Beschorneria yuccoides (Mexican Lily) is an evergreen perennial forming a soft stemless rosette of strap-shaped, gray-green leaves, up to 2 ft. long (60 cm). Tough and pliable, the leaves are smooth, without teeth or spines. Eventually the rosette will increase slowly by offsets to form a cluster of rosettes. In late spring to early summer, the foliage is topped with a Beschorneria yuccoides NC State University and N.C. The long grey-green, sword shaped leaves form a rosette, emerging erect, and spreading as new growth appears. Large flower spikes appear on mature plants during late summer to display a mass of attractive, pink, bell-shaped flowers, which sit above the leaves. Beschorneria was named in honor of Friedrich Wilhelm Christian Beschorner 1806-73, a German amateur botanist. This plant was a mutation discovered on a non-variegated Beschorneria yuccoides in a garden near Hamilton, New Zealand in 2005 by landscape designer Graeme Burton of Ohaupo, New Zealand.

Beschorneria yuccoides has survived several cold winters untouched and provides a set of spectacular flower spikes each year in June or July. B. yuccoides is also a Mexican plant but seems, with us, perfectly tolerant of wet winters and some frost.

They are gray-green to green, about 40–60 cm (16–24 in) long and 3.3–3.5 cm (1.3–1.4 in) wide. The leaf margins are finely denticulate.
